I was having breakfast with Supercoach, Michael Neill the other day and we got
to talking about our thought-experienced reality among many other things. And I
remembered this great story which came out of his interview for the movie and
wanted to share it with you:

"I had a client once, business client, and he said to me, I think it was two
weeks before the first session and the second session, and he came back for the
second session and said – what did you do to me? I said what do you mean?

He said, I have been biting my nails for 20 years, I have tried hypnosis, I have

	&#8220;I had a client once, business client, and he said to me, I think it was two weeks before the first session and the second session, and he came back for the second session and said – what did you do to me? I said what do you mean?</p>
<p>
	He said, I have been biting my nails for 20 years, I have tried hypnosis, I have tried CBT, I have tried all these things, I am not biting on my nails, I can’t even get myself to bite my nails, what did you do? I said, well we can agree that I didn’t do anything because I didn’t know you bit your nails, you didn’t even talk about it. I said but I can tell you what probably happened, and I said imagine there’s a world filled with dragons, like evil nasty dragons. And the bite or scratch of a dragon is toxic and will make you ill and stressed and feel horrible. And so you would naturally build castles to try and defend yourself against the dragons.</p>
<p>
	Some people try to build the castle out of money, if I just have enough money the dragons won’t get me. Some will try and build it out of love. If I can find one person who loves me enough or a lot of people who love me a little that’ll keep me safe from the dragons. Some people try and do it through power. If I become powerful enough the dragons won’t be able to get me. Well meanwhile there’s a whole bunch of people, who just the castle building thing isn’t going to work out for them and they are just trying to cope with dragon bites, and so they drink or they smoke or they bite their nails or they over eat, or they do whatever they know to do to cope with dragon bites.</p>
<p>
	What if you wake up one day and you realize beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are no dragons. Now everyone else still thinks there are, you can’t even really talk to them about it, because that’s crazy, of course there are dragons. Well you might go back to your castle building and kind of…you might still build it because its fun but you wouldn’t build it with that same sense of desperation behind it anymore.</p>
<p>
	And if you used to do something to cope with dragon bites and you realize that you can’t be bit by a dragon and that feeling is just your own fear, your own thoughts creating fear inside you, well you don’t need an antidote to rat poison that you didn’t drink. You don’t need a coping mechanism when there’s nothing left to cope with and that’s the power for me of mindfulness, that’s the power of clarity of mind, of recognizing that we live in a thought-created experience of our lives, and if we allow it to it will flow and change&#8230;&#8221;</p>

"I think that the best part of the program was just recognizing that my thoughts
are not me, that the thing of really detaching myself from my thoughts and just
becoming more aware of them, I think was just huge. Before it was just very

Hence, peak performance is more easily achieved when we act and react without “trying to do anything.” In this case “trying” simply means not forcing or expecting the result. We watch our thoughts and trust our natural underlying current to propel us naturally and effortlessly to our goal. Therefore, we are more productive. Never fight a riptide, be mindful of its current and swim along it to free yourself.</span></span></p>

	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif"><strong>Paradox 2: Act. React. But, Always in Play.</strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif">As young children, we played for the sake of playing. We loved to play for the sole sake of having fun. It was our natural potential to do so. When a photon of light travels 93 million miles in about eight minutes from our Sun to the Earth and kisses a flower to give it life, it does so because of its natural potential. Birds soar, fish swim, and trees turn their leaves straight to the sun. All of this happens without deliberate effort and in play. Cultivating mindfulness allows us to act a little more in our natural potential. Our work becomes play when we remove the ego, which casts a shadow of greed and being self-centered. We work because it&#8217;s our natural potential to do so. If we gain from it, then it’s a natural end&#8211;just as bees end up with honey after their long play in the flowers.</span></span></p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif"><strong>Paradox 3: Seek mind with no thought.</strong></span></span></p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif">When we mindfully eat, we taste more flavors and experience more textures of the food—eating is now enhanced. When we mindfully look into our mind, we grasp more of the flavors of who we are and why we do what we do—living is now enhanced. Cultivating mindfulness means we are non-judgmentally paying attention to something in the present moment. When we direct our attention inward, we sometimes see the “stuff” that makes us who we are—our inner feelings, thoughts, and desires—and we want to remain open and friendly to them. If we don’t, we can trap ourselves in the sticky web of the “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts.” This leads us to compartmentalize our thoughts and feelings and thus we cannot see them clearly. When being mindful—and not judgmental—of our mind’s inner workings, our intuition increases. Intuition leads to inner wisdom which helps us know what is right and what is wrong. And not just for ourselves, but also regarding&nbsp;our impact on those around us. In turn, we become less egocentric and more allocentric—experiencing not just one, but many flavors of the life.</span></span></p>

	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif">&#8220;<span>We have the possibility to evolve culturally, to understand the neuro-biology of a separate self and how it is in fact a delusion, and just like we have a tendency to eat too many sweets, eat too much salt, eat too much fat, because we evolved with a scarcity of those things. So we find them, our nervous system evolved and said get them, get more of them. And in the same way we got to say okay, that’s our evolutionary neuro-biology, now how do we use consciousness to overcome innate neuro-biological things? You can do that through education within a shift in culture. So anyway in media that we can promote this larger sense of awareness is going to help.</span></span></span></p>
<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif">Studies of our connectedness suggest if we could even just bring one awakened mind in contact with a few others, those few others are going to positively affect the others and the others and the others, so this work of our inter-connectedness really gives us a sense of optimism. But we all have to be moving in that direction.</span></span></p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px"><span style="font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif">I don’t particularly like the word “ego” because people think it’s either a bad thing or a good thing, rather than saying you can have a sense of a bodily self that has important needs, self-esteem, actualization, mastery, accomplishment, being acknowledged for who you are, being seen, feeling safe &#8230; They’re good, they’re really good. When they’re blended with the idea of extending beyond the self-defined, by the skin, where you move out and say we’re all inter-connected and I am going to get joy from your accomplishments. That’s the kind of world we need to push for, empathic joy, compassion helping people who are suffering, a feeling of collaboration not just competition, being excited. In fact when we humans accomplish stuff that makes good in the world, you may not have invented it, but you could be rejoicing in the idea that together collectively we can make a better planet.&#8221;</span></span></p>

As if the stress-relieving, healthifying effects of mindfulness weren’t enough,
a new study shows it could actually help students perform better on tests by
boosting their memory and reading comprehension skills.

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, shows that
mindfulness training could help college students do better on the verbal
reasoning part of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination, an admissions test
commonly used for graduate school).
